Abstract:

Photograph album documenting the social and leisure activities of Archeleen Scrutchings (1927-2021) and her African American milieu during her years attending Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho. Images depict friends and fellow students; Archeleen's colleagues in Pocatello's African Methodist Episcopal Church community; portraits and snapshots of African American men in military uniform; and houses and cars of family and friends, among other topics. Members of the LaRue family (Mary, Joseph (J.D.) and Jacob) are depicted throughout. Also includes scenes taken in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho; Birmingham, Alabama (Scrutchings' birthplace); Portland, Oregon: and Bremerton and Seattle, Washington; among other locations. Also includes a few images of Japanese Americans who lived in Scrutchings' neighborhood in Pocatello. Most individuals are identified by name in captions. Subject matter of negatives overlaps that of many prints in the album.
